ROX is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is leading the nation in programming, research and education focused on girls. We do this by: - Implementing evidence-based programming for girls; - Conducting relevant and innovative research focused on adolescent girls; and - Educating the community on issues impacting girls through professional development workshops for educators and counselors and adult-teen relationship building workshops. History: The ROX Program began as a research study in 2006 at The Ohio State University to address the multiplicity of challenges that face adolescent girls, such as drops in self-esteem and confidence, navigating difficult friendships and relationships, dealing with unhealthy dating interactions and sexual violence, planning for their future and their careers and developing effective leadership skills. The program was piloted with 57 girls in three urban Columbus City Schools and the program incubated at OSU for five years. During that time, we received a growing number of requests from schools and educators in Ohio and Pennsylvania who were seeking access to the ROX Program. To meet this growing demand and actualize the full potential of the ROX Program, Ruling Our eXperiences, Inc. was incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in 2011. Evidence-based Programming for Girls: Since 2011, ROX has scaled nationally and ROX Programs are implemented in all types of communities and school environments across 14 states. More than 4,000 girls participate in the ROX Program annually! Since the program began in 2006, more than 12,000 girls have participated in the 20-week program and more than 30,000 adults have been impacted by our work at ROX, Inc. Large Scale National Research: In 2017, ROX conducted and disseminated THE GIRLS’ INDEX™ the first-ever, large-scale national survey designed to develop a deeper understanding of the experiences of teen girls throughout the US. While a plethora of research exists on the economic status, health trends, safety and crime victimization, drug use and risk-behavior of teens, there is little data that delves deeper into the lived experiences of girls and provides the opportunity for girls to share their thoughts and opinions related to a variety of relevant issues currently impacting their lives. Additional analysis has been published in two impact research reports: 'Girls & Sports' and 'Girls, STEM and Careers'. This research provides a deeper understanding of the thoughts, experiences, perceptions, beliefs, behaviors and attitudes of nearly 11,000 teen girls across the nation. Professional Development & Workshops: In response to the continued requests and demonstrated need for adults to have evidence-based tools to better support girls, launched the ROX Institute for Research & Training in 2019. The ROX Institute is the nation’s first multidisciplinary institute focused on girls, designed to create in-person and virtual learning opportunities to help parents, caregivers and paraprofessionals educate, support and empower girls. Courses are designed for parents, guardians and mentors, and address the complex needs of today’s girls through targeted programs and educational content that enables adults to make data-informed decisions when raising, teaching, mentoring and caring for girls.
